New! Recent review of individual track from jazz.com "Displacement" 2/18/08
"Eleven
of Evan's creations, some probably unfamiliar to many fans receive
a close-to-ideal reading from Alden, whose guitar dances delightfully
over the melody line on the opening "Tune for a Lyric." There
follows some very satisfying ensemble showcasing, with guest
artist Frank Wess contributing tenor sax in the breezy, breathy
Getz-meets-Byrd vein on "Loosse Bloose' and "Laurie." Wess also
shares with Alden the harmonic expression of the nutty, funny
melody line on "Five," playing his flute a little bit safer
than Alden's ax, which effectively works as well on the title
tune displaying Alden's gentler caressing side, a dynamic contrast
to his speed scatting on "Displacement." Drummer Al Harewood
and bassist Michael Moore show their own sympathy for the project
on "Maxine," exquisitely arranged to display tasty cymbal artistry
and an enchanting solo by Moore, who also swings smartly on
"Loose Bloose." Moore and Alden together bring tender loving
care to the sensitive bossa, "Time Remembered," restating the
coposer's proof that you can be happy even when you're sad."
Jeff Kaliss, JAZZTIMES (May 1995)
"Howard Alden is one of the few musicians who could tackle an entire album of originals by the late great pianist Bill Evans without a keyboard in the studio. Alden's switch to seven-string guitar has given him the ability to tackle Evans' most complex harmonies. Backed by the driving rhythm of bassist Michael Moore and drummer Al Harewood, Alden defty maneuvers through the precarious "Displacement." He also proves himself a master of soft ballads with "Maxine." Tenor saxophonist Frank Wess is added for the slow but swinging "Loose Bloose" and the intricate "Funkallero." Wess switches to flute for "Five," a brilliant interpretation of a typical Evans set closer. "Your Story" is a lyrical Alden-Wess duet arrangement.
Howard Alden is also commended for choosing works by Evans that only his serious fans will know. This is one of the top jazz releases of 1994."
