"No guitarist has taken chordal-based playing to a higher conceptual or technical plane than 7-string master George Van Eps, whose last major recording was released more than two decades ago. When former pupil Howard Alden -- a brilliant young player in his own right -- suggested they join forces, Van Eps accepted the offer. The result is this multidimensional performance, where Alden's pickstyle single-note work perfectly complements Van Eps' intricate fingerstyle approach. Howard pays homage to his mentor with "Queerology," which Van Eps wrote in the late '30s, while George goes solo on "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Embraceable You," demonstrating that the passage of time has only cemented his remarkable technique and harmonic conception. Intelligent yet accessible, swinging, and rife with the kind of interplay only big ears can generate, this recording is an instant jazz classic."
Jim Ferguson, GUITAR PLAYER (Feb 1992)

"This memorable duo pairing of veteran George Van Eps and Howard Alden is cause for celebration. With bassist Dave Stone and drummer Jake Hanna's tasty support the two guitarists gently swing through a nostalgia-inducing repertoire. Van Eps' chordal style seven-string playing is the centerpiece to this collection. His "lap piano" style is truly orchestral in approach and offers his younger partner a lush canvas to paint his single-note improvisations. Van Eps' long career, included stints with both British bandleader Ray Noble and Fats Waller and prompts gorgeously intricate cover versions of Noble's "I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You" and "The Touch of Your Lips" and Waller's trademark "Ain't Misbehavin'". Alden's solo reading of Van Eps' composition Queerology is another gem in a set studded with romantic beauties. A little treasure. Highly recommended."
